Humane Officer Funding Cut to State Minimum -

What should a life be worth in Portage County if the life is a dog or a cat? 

 That question may become one for debate in the months ahead as Portage County taxpayers choose what is important, or not important, to the lives of their communities.

 In early December, the Portage Animal Protective League board was notified by the Portage County Commissioners that it was reducing its financial support for the position of Humane Officer to $25 per month … the minimum amount established by the Ohio Legislature back in 1953. 

Portage APL Board Appoints Chalan Lowry As Executive Director -

              The board of Portage Animal Protective League recently announced its selection of Chalan Lowry as its new executive director.  Ms. Lowry replaces Karen Carmany who, as board president, has been “acting Executive director” for the past three years without compensation.

"Paws To Taste" An Evening For Animal Support -

 

 Corks were popping at Aurora Golf Club on December 3rd when wine and animal lovers toasted the holidays in support of Portage APL.   The charity event was created to help feed and provide medical care and shelter for over a thousand dogs and cats awaiting loving homes through adoption.

A Sad Day Brings Call For Help -

  When a man in his 50’s was evicted from his rented Suffield township residence, Portage APL was called into action.  The man, who obviously loved cats, but was unable to afford getting them spayed or neutered, surrendered 44 adult animals in various states of malnutrition and health to Portage APL humane officer Steve Chapman and Shelter staff.   Eight of the cats, after examination by a veterinarian had to be euthanized.  The remaining 36 cats
