Break-In at Portage APL

Break-in2016PORTAGE APL BREAK-IN: On the evening of March 10, 2016 Portage Animal Protective League experienced their first break- in. The suspect (who can be seen on surveillance video) entered by breaking through an office window.

Unfortunately, the alarm system malfunctioned and did not call the Sheriff’s Dept. So, the next morning Dog Coordinator Kathy Cordaro arrived at the shelter around 5:45am to find cold air coming in through a shattered office window and glass all over the office floor. She immediately called the Portage County Sheriff’s Dept. They arrived within minutes. She left the building (as directed) and waited for them to clear the building. She then called APL Executive Director, Chalan Lowry and Shelter Manager Bev Bickley. They arrived shortly after.

“Getting the call at 5:45am about a break-in was one of the worst calls I have ever received” says Chalan Lowry, Executive Director. “You immediately panic and think about the animals. Are they ok, hurt, or have they been let out of their cages? Your mind goes a million directions and all you can do is get there as fast as you can. Windows and items can be replaced, but these animals are our reason for being. It was a hard day for animals and staff.”

Once allowed in the building Kathy began to check on the animals. While many animals seemed afraid and upset, all animals were accounted for except two cats. Detective Jim Acklin began gathering appropriate information in order to identify and apprehend the suspect. Luckily the video showed a clear view of the suspect and two APL staff recognized the person immediately. Thanks to the quick actions of Portage County Sheriff’s Department and APL staff, the suspect was apprehended within hours of the call.

Per the Lt. Johnson at PCSO, “Contact was made with Kristeen Pascoe on March 11 and she was taken into custody without incident at that time. Pascoe is currently incarcerated at the Portage Jail. Pascoe was charged with one count of Breaking and Entering, a 5th degree felony and two counts of Vandalism, both felonies of the 5th degree, and one count of Theft, a 1st degree misdemeanor. Pascoe has been arraigned on these charges and has a $15,000 / 10% bond.

The Portage APL is a private, nonprofit organization and relies on the generosity and kindness of individuals and businesses to help thousands of animals who have no voice. If you would like to help you can donate online at
